Jimmie Johnson led only 10 laps on Saturday night, but he was out front when it counted – on the final lap – as he scored the victory in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series SpongeBob Squarepants 400 at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan.
Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus made a bold call on the final pit stop, choosing to stay out on old tires while the leaders hit pit road. The moved paid off, as Johnson made the most of the clean air while working to dirty the air around Kevin Harvick’s car. That allowed the six time Sprint Cup champ to score his third win of the season.
Post race, Johnson and Knaus talked about their race and their winning move at the end. We also heard from second place Harvick, along with ninth place finisher Martin Truex, Jr., who early on appeared to be on his way to the win until the late caution derailed his strong run.
On Friday night, Matt Crafton used fuel mileage to score his second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory at Kansas City. He inherited the lead after Tyler Reddick and Erik Jones both ran out of fuel. Afterwards, Crafton talked about the fuel mileage win. We also heard from second place finisher Ryan Newman, who made a rare Truck Series start driving for Joe Nemechek.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series next heads for Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Sprint All-Star Race on Saturday night, while the NASCAR Xfinity Series is in action at the Iowa Speedway on Sunday. WDUN will have live coverage of the complete race weekend.
