Officials say clogged drains caused Atlanta highway flooding

By Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) Officials in Atlanta say clogged drains were to blame for flooding that closed a major highway that runs through the heart of the city.

Georgia Department of Transportation officials said the Downtown Connector was temporarily closed in both directions Sunday afternoon and advised drivers to seek other routes.

GDOT officials originally said the flooding was caused by a water main break. But The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Atlanta's Department of Watershed Management later said there had not been a water main break and clogged drains along the highway were to blame.

Department of Watershed Management spokeswoman Lillian Govus told the newspaper watershed crews were the first to arrive at the scene and helped unclog the drains.

No further information was immediately available.
