ATLANTA — A faction of the Ku Klux Klan could find out as early as Thursday if they'll be allowed to "adopt" a portion of a highway in northeast Georgia.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution says the Georgia Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments in the case Thursday morning. It involves the group's request in 2012 to adopt a portion of Highway 515 near Blairsville as part of Georgia's Adopt-A-Highway program. If the application had been approved, a sign recognizing the KKK would have been erected somewhere along the one-mile stretch of road.
State transportation officials cited public safety concerns when they denied the application.
The ACLU is bringing the case. Lawyers with the civil liberties group say the Klan's right to free speech has been violated.
