ATLANTA - Starting Monday, summer travelers on I-85 southbound in northeast Georgia will have to find somewhere else besides the Georgia. Welcome Center to take a break.
The State DOT has issued a reminder the facility will close for renovations for as many as 55 days. Neither th building or the parking lots will be accessible to travelers.
DOT engineers said most of the major systems in the building will be replaced. New HVAC, new drywall and painting are all part of the renovations, according to engineers. They also said the Welcome Center will become more environmentally responsible with low flow, automatic flush valve toilets and LED lighting inside and outside.
The cost of the renovation for the 16,640 square-foot facility is around $720,000.
The Georgia Welcome Center sits just off I-85 south at Lavonia.
