Two people, dog have a scare on the river below Buford Dam

By AccessWDUN Staff

SUWANEE — There were some scary moments for a couple and their dog on the Chattahoochee River below Buford Dam Tuesday afternoon when they were caught in a swift current.

Gwinnett County emergency personnel said the man and woman and their pet were caught in the swift current just after 4:30 p.m. as water was being generated from the dam and their canoe flipped. The two told authorities they were in the canoe and were using a “drag-anchor” to steady the boat due to the river current. The anchor became snagged on an object in the water - possibly a tree or a rock -  and the canoe flipped over.

Firefighters say they responded to the Settles Bridge area in Suwanee and found the pair and the dog had already made it to the riverbank.

They were evaluated by paramedics at the scene and released.
