Open house planned in Barrow Co. to discuss new SR 11 bridge

By Bryan Pirkle Reporter
BETHLEHEM - The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) will hold a public information open house later this month to share plans related to the upcoming replacement of the State Route 11 bridge over the Apalachee River in Barrow County.

According to a media release from DOT Communications Director Teri Pope, the current bridge, which was built in 1942, no longer meets current design standards.

The proposed changes include extending the length of the bridge from 200 feet to 280 feet, as well as widening the bridge from 24 feet to 40 feet across. These changes will allow for a pedestrian walkway and an area where vehicles can be moved if the need arises.

Pope said the open house will be held on Thursday, August 13th, at Bethlehem City Hall from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Bethlehem City Hall is located at 750 Manager Avenue in Bethlehem.

The meeting will include enginneers and consultants from the DOT, who will be on hand to dicuss the proposed changes. Pope noted that no formal presentation will be made during the open house.

Following the meeting, a display of the project will be available for public viewing at the the DOT District Office, located at 2205 Athens Highway in Gainesville, as well as the DOT Athens-Area Office, located at 450 Old Hull Road in Athens.

Information about the project will also be made available online after the conclusion of the meeting. That information will be posted to the DOT's website.

Those who attend the meeting will be given the option of having their comments recorded. Anyone unable to attend can also submit comments between now and August 23rd by writing to the following:
