Moped driver ends up in jail after he's hit by truck

By B.J. Williams

GAINESVILLE — The driver of a Moped was hit by a pick-up truck on Athens Highway south of Gainesville Tuesday morning, but he was the one who ended up in jail.

Hall County authorities said Derrick Harrington was driving the Moped on Athens Highway near Oak Grove Road when he was struck from behind by a Chevrolet truck. The incident happened around 6:30 a.m., and the truck driver said he was unable to see the moped as it traveled down the roadway.

Harrington sustained minor injuries in the accident, but authorities said they determined he was operating the Moped while intoxicated, so he was charged with DUI. Harrington also was cited for suspended license, no driver’s license and operating a Moped on a roadway with a speed zone higher than 35 mph.

Authorities said Harrington also had an outstanding warrant out of Forsyth County.

Harrington was transported to the Hall County Jail.
