CLARKESVILLE - While no official announcement has been made, Habersham Electric Membership Corp. officials confirmed the electric cooperative is in negotiations to purchase an area Internet provider.
Nicole Dover, director of marketing and communications for HEMC, said via email Tuesday that Georgia Communications Cooperative, a division of the North Georgia Network, recently purchased Appalachian Broadband Technologies.
"Habersham EMC is in negotiations to purchase the ABT assets and customers located within the counties we serve," Dover said. "This includes existing ABT contracts with municipalities."
The issue was revealed in Monday night's Clarkesville City Council meeting, where city officials had to vote whether they wanted to purchase the ABT broadband infrastructure located on city facilities.
The Clarkesville City Council chose not to exercise the option to purchase the system, saying talks with HEMC officials have indicated they would make positive improvements, expanding service to key city facilities.
"Habersham EMC representatives have been meeting with municipalities regarding the purchase," Dover said. "No announcement had been made yet by Habersham EMC as we wanted to allow the individual cities time to present to their councils."
