LAWRENCEVILLE — A 10-week-old baby hospitalized a week ago has died from injuries he allegedly suffered at the hands of his father.
Gwinnett County police investigators said the baby boy died on Sunday afternoon at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. He had been hospitalized since September 2 when his mother came home from work and noticed that the baby had some breathing problems, according to a police press statement.
At the hospital, the baby was diagnosed with a skull fracture. At that time, the baby's father 50-year-old Kelvin Odom was arrested and charged with child cruelty.
Police said they had been to the family's apartment several hours before the baby was hospitalized. The caller told dispatchers that the baby was not breathing, but when emergency personnel arrived, the child had resumed breathing and appeared normal, according to police. Odom declined to have the baby taken to the hospital for additional observation. Police said Odom was the only adult at home at the time; his wife was at work.
At this point in the investigation, investigators are awaiting the manner and cause of death ruling from the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner. The ruling will determine if additional charges will be filed against Kelvin Odom. DFACS is also actively involved in the investigation, since there were four other children in the apartment at the time of the initial call.
