Hall school officials consider bilingual diploma

By Derreck Booth

GAINESVILLE - Hall County public school officials are examining the idea of high school diplomas with denotation indicating students who are proficient in more than one language.

Hall County Schools Superintendent Will Schofield said the idea is in response to workplace skills of the 21st century, including being bi-lingual and able to function in a multi-cultural environment.

"Being able to work with people who are different than we are and come from different places and have different backgrounds," Schofield said.

The consideration is for a diploma seal of sorts, indicating the graduate is proficient in speaking, writing, reading and listening in more than one language.

"That would be a seal that would lead directly into a leg up for students in terms of the workplace, that they would be fluent in at least two languages," Schofield said.

The item was on last Monday's agenda for the Hall County Board of Education under reports, recommendations and policies.
