GAINESVILLE - A Healthcare Science student from Barrow County has been named the 2016 GOAL winner for Lanier Technical College.

Evelyn Johnson, a Winder resident, will now move on to a 2-day regional competition in Atlanta as part of an all-expenses-paid trip this April.

Dr. Ray Perren, Lanier Tech's President, made the GOAL announcement at the college's GOAL and Rick Perkins Awards Luncheon, which was held at the Gainesville Civic Center on Wednesday.

GOAL is described as "a statewide program of the Technical College System of Georgia" that "honors excellence in academics and leadership among the state's technical college students," according to a media release.

One winner is selected at each of Georgia's 22 technical college, "as well as one Board of Regents college with a technical education division."

The release said that the group of 23 winners will be pared down to just 9 during the April competition, with one of those contestants eventually beling selected by a judge's panel as the overall 2016 state GOAL winner and the recipient of the GOAL medallion.
Johnson beat out 3 others semifinalists from Lanier Tech to win the award. The runners-up were Jillian Thiele of Forsyth County (Interiors);  Summer Russell of Hall County (Accounting); and Zachary Dean of Clarke County (Motorsports Vehicle Technology).
