By AccessWDUN Staff

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirms the arrest of the man suspected in a carjacking and kidnapping in Walton County on Sunday.

A statement from GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said John Christopher Calhoun, 29, was taken into custody in Walton County after a high-speed chase. The Walton Tribune reported on social media that Calhoun was captured behind the Walton County Fire Rescue headquarters building on Bold Springs Road.

Calhoun had been the object of a search since Sunday, when he allegedly stuffed an 81-year-old woman into the truck of a stolen vehicle and fled from Walton County into Barrow County. Calhoun wrecked the vehicle in the Winder area and fled on foot. In addition, Miles said Calhoun assaulted another person - this time a man in Barrow County - before his arrest on Monday. Both assault victims are hospitalized.

Miles said Calhoun faces the following charges:

  • Two (2) counts of carjacking,
  • Two (2) counts of aggravated assault
  • Two (2) counts of aggravated battery
  • Two (2) counts of armed robbery
  • Two (2) counts of vehicle theft
  • Two (2) counts of elder abuse
  • One (1) count of burglary
  • One (1) count of kidnapping
  • One (1) count of financial transaction card fraud

The investigation remains active.
