Immigration protests lead to arrests at 2 Georgia colleges

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) Police say they made several arrests during protests at two Georgia college campuses over how state universities treat people living in the U.S. illegally.

Six protesters were arrested on misdemeanor trespassing charges at the University of Georgia in Athens, while a similar protest at Georgia State University in Atlanta resulted in eight arrests. The demonstrations followed a Georgia Supreme Court decision Monday against several people brought into the country illegally as children who were seeking in-state tuition.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports (bit.ly/1JVEJC6) UGA police charged protesters who refused to leave a campus building after it closed Monday.

Georgia State University Deputy Police Chief Carlton Mullis tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/1Q9Ps8s ) protesters staging a similar sit-in were arrested early Tuesday after the demonstration became unruly, with some participants shoving police officers.
