Suspected tornado damages Army post in Georgia

FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) A spokesman for Fort Stewart says a suspected tornado left a trail of damage inside the Army post in southeast Georgia.

Spokesman Kevin Larson says a twister downed trees and damaged vehicles and some buildings Tuesday evening, though the extent of the damage was not immediately known. Larson said no injuries had been reported.

The National Weather Service said there were reports of a tornado moving northeast at about 35 mph at about 5 p.m. Tornado warnings were issued for Chatham, Bryan and Effingham counties west of Savannah.

Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River. Much of its land area is uninhabited forestland.

Storms moving across Georgia on Tuesday are part of a system reaching from the Gulf Coast nearly to the Great Lakes.
