Hall deputies combine job fair, ADVANCE event

By Derreck Booth

A recruiting event for the Hall County Sheriff's Office ADVANCE camp next month will also include a job fair, authorities said.

The ADVANCE program is in its 15th year.  It involves deputies working with 5th grade school children on a variety of safety skills, including social competence, conflict resolution, and positive alternatives to drugs, violence, cyber-bullying, and gangs.

The program operates during the school year, focusing on 5th grade students.

"They'll (ADVANCE deputies) just target those children and try to prepare them for middle school and high school where they tend to be subjected more to that type of environment," Deputy Nicole Bailes said.

It also includes components on personal safety, stranger-danger, internet safety, water safety and health and fitness, according to the sheriff's office.

The Summer component, or camp, focuses on a similar curriculum.

In an effort to recruit about 260 students between the ages of 9-12 for the camp, the department is hosting an event at the Dawsonville Highway location of Academy Sports in Hall County.

The May 14th offering will run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Organizers have included a touch-a-truck display, pizza and refreshments.  Sgt. Greg Cochran, known for his feats of strength, will be on hand to do a truck pull.

The May 14 recruiting effort will be the deadline to register for the camp, scheduled June 13-17 at Free Chapel Worship Center.

In addition to the fun, department officials hope to recruit candidates for open jobs in the department at the event.

"We have several jailer positions.  We have deputy sheriff positions that are available, in addition to an accounting secretary position that's available," Bailes said.

Lt. Donald McDuffie will be at the event to talk to potential job candidates.
