UPDATE: Case involving former West Hall boys' basketball coach sent to superior court

The case of a former West Hall boys' basketball coach accused of an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old student was sent to superior court Thursday.

A representative from the Hall County Magistrate Court office said a conditional bond of $5000 was also set for Zac Swansey, 27, Thursday.

Sheriff's Deputy Nicole Bailes said Swansey was arrested at his Flowery Branch home without incident on Wednesday, charged with felony sexual assault to a student.

"Georgia law basically states that when you're in a capacity, such as coach Swansey, that you can't engage in any sort of sexual contact or behavior with any student that they may teach," Bailes said.

She said had the 17-year-old been a non-student, the charge would not apply.

Swansey resigned from his positions earlier this week in the wake of a school investigation.

"We had cooperation from coach Swansey, and the student as well, so there were no denying that a sexual relationship happened," Bailes said.

The Hall County Board of Education is expected to officially take up Swansey's employment on Monday.

"They won't meet again until May 16, but I wanted the public to be assured that Coach Swansey will have no further contact with the school district or West Hall High School," schools system spokesman and athletic director Gordon Higgins said on Monday.

Swansey remained in the Hall County Jail as of late Thursday afternoon.
