Work to begin this week to change Airport Parkway to one-way street after council vote

By B.J. Williams
Gainesville residents who work in Airport Industrial Park will soon get some traffic relief - especially at the end of the work day.

Gainesville City Council members gave final approval at their Tuesday night voting session to make Airport Parkway a one-way street.

Gainesville City Manager Bryan Lackey said the action was prompted by citizens who work in the industries at Airport Industrial Park.

"I think everyone that works there knows the challenge that there is getting out of there at 5 o'clock," Lackey said. "Doing that [making it one way] will allow all traffic to come from one direction coming onto West Ridge to get out onto Queen City Parkway, so that keeps a better flow."

He said city crews will start work this week on making the necessary changes to the roadway.

"The staff will begin later this week and next week putting plans into place, including the changing in the striping. We do have to add a little bit in the right-hand turn lane out of the industrial parkway."

The vote to approve the change was unanimous.
