City of Oakwood prepares for widening of Old Oakwood Road

By B.J. Williams
The city of Oakwood is planning to widen a portion of Old Oakwood Road to improve traffic operations along the commercial corridor.

Oakwood City Manager Stan Brown said the project involves widening the two lanes of  Old Oakwood Road to three lanes from Mundy Mill Road to the main entrance of the PFG expansion project. The company broke ground on a new 174,000-square foot building on 43 acres of property on Old Oakwood Road last summer.

Brown said the city's schedule is to receive bids by June 9, award the contract on June 13 and begin work in July. The anticipated completion date is October 31, 2016.

A legal ad for the project said the work includes not just the widening of the road, but also construction of sidewalks and relocation of an existing waterline, among other things.

Brown also said the city is planning on a future phase to continue the widening to the Tumbling Creek Road intersection when the bridge over the railroad is constructed.

He said widening the road will better accommodate current and future truck traffic in the area.
