UPDATE: State troopers look for truck that hit pedestrian on I-85

By B.J. Williams

The Georgia State Patrol is looking for the driver of a box truck that left the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash on I-85 in Jackson County Tuesday afternoon.

Troopers said the victim in the incident was Aleksander Petrovich, 57, of Asheville, North Carolina. Petrovich was driving a tractor trailer and had pulled over on the shoulder of the interstate near Dry Pond Road. He had exited his rig and had stepped into the southbound lane of the interstate when he was struck by a southbound vehicle. Initial reports from Jackson County emergency personnel indicated the victim has been hit by the tractor trailer; that was not the case.

Witnesses told investigators the truck had a graphic of a picture frame with green and red artwork within the frame and the word “foodservice” in the name. The truck will also have a missing passenger side mirror.

The driver was described as a white and/or Hispanic male in his 40’s with a beard.

Anyone with information on the vehicle is asked to contact the Georgia State Patrol Post in Athens at 706-552-4439.

The fatal crash occurred around 2:20 p.m., according to authorities.
