Gwinnett PD: 2-hour standoff after wanted man crawls into attic

By The Associated Press

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga (AP) - Police in Lawrenceville say they evacuated several apartments and summoned a SWAT team after a two-hour standoff with a man who crawled into an attic and refused to surrender when officers came to arrest him.

Gwinnett County police said in a news release that 27-year-old Tyrone Porter was arrested Monday afternoon. They said authorities had been attempting to arrest Porter on battery and parole violation warrants stemming from gun charges in Illinois.

They said Porter crawled into an attic and wouldn't surrender. Police said adjacent apartments were evacuated, and a SWAT team was summoned.

Ultimately, Porter surrendered, no shots were fired and no one was harmed.

Porter was being held Monday night at the Gwinnett County Detention Center. Jail records do not indicate if he has an attorney.
