More than 100 people gathered Monday afternoon in the Chapel at First Baptist Church in Gainesville to see five special men receive their high school diplomas. The Hall County District awarded diplomas to five armed service veterans who dropped out of school and served the United States in foreign wars.
World War II veterans - and brothers - Howell Smallwood, Horace Smallwood and James Smallwood were honored with diplomas from North Hall High School. Larry Lee Satterfield, a veteran of the Vietnam War, also received his diploma from NHHS. Vietnam Veteran Quinton Thomas Cable was unable to attend the ceremony, but his granddaughter Hannah Cable Schofield, accepted his NHHS diploma on his behalf.
General Jim Butterworth, Director of Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency delivered letters to the honorees from Governor Nathan Deal and offered words of appreciation to the men.
