By The Associated Press

BARNESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a man wanted on aggravated stalking charges was shot by a deputy after a high-speed chase near a high school in central Georgia.

Lamar County Sheriff Brad White tells local news media that Tyler Pitts was wounded Thursday after a shootout with deputies. Police and deputies chased Pitts for nearly six miles, causing Lamar County High School to briefly lockdown.

White says Pitts shot from his SUV at deputies, who returned fire. Pitts was wanted on aggravated stalking charges related to his wife, who worked in Barnesville, which is 50 miles south of Atlanta.

Pitts was taken to Macon Medical Hospital. His condition has not been released.

No deputies or officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.
