Oakwood Goodwill hosts New Year job fair

The Oakwood Goodwill Career Center hosted a New Year hiring event today that featured close to 20 hiring managers.

The event was part of Goodwill of North Georgia's New Year/New Job program that features over 150 employers at the 13 area Goodwill locations looking to hire people, many of them on the spot.

"Once the New Year rolls around, a lot of people are getting into gear," said Elaine Armstrong, the Vice President of Marketing for Goodwill of North Georgia. "They're making New Year's resolutions, and a lot of times finding a better job, moving up at their current job or finding a job are some of the things that top their list of things to do."

Armstrong says she expects a couple thousand people to come out to the New Year/New Job fair, which is in its fifth year.

Goodwill offers additional job fairs at least once a month at all 13 of their North Georgia locations, and Armstrong says the career center doors are always open.

"We often have employers in our offices," she said. "Even if it isn't a large job fair, it might be one employer who's looking for five folks, so it might be that great job match for someone.

"We also encourage (people) to come into the career center and just chat with our staff. They're going to know who's going to be on site that day. They'll also know what local job postings that we have."

According to Armstrong, Goodwill's mission this year is to help 23,000 North Georgians find employment and it's not just through job fairs.

Goodwill offers a lot of training programs and opportunities for people to brush up on their skills or get a new resume and shop it around.

"The great thing about us is that we like to be community based," Armstrong said. "So employers who are looking for employees often times come to us first and say, 'Who do you have?'"
