While the city of Atlanta typically has the largest parade for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, communities in North Georgia also plan to honor the slain civil rights leader with marches, parades and speeches.
Cornelia hosts annual peace march Sunday, January 15
The 31st annual NE Georgia MLK, Jr. Peace Walk is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday in Cornelia. The march, which is a half mile in length, begins at the Big Red Apple in downtown Cornelia and ends at Shady Grove Baptist church on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. A special program follows the march, and then everyone is invited to stay for a chili and soup reception.
Newtown Florist Club again spearheads Gainesville MLK events
A full day of activities for the King holiday is scheduled in Gainesville. The schedule is as follows:

Lawrenceville parade, hosted by The United Ebony Society, set for Monday
For the 17th year, The United Ebony Society will host the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration in Lawrenceville. The theme for this year’s parade is “Striving for Excellence: Awareness, Education and Community Service." The parade begins at 11 a.m. Monday, stepping off at the Gwinnett Justice & Administration Center (75 Langley Drive) and concluding at Moore Middle School (1221 Lawrenceville Highway).
