CLEVELAND — No one was hurt when a chimney fire spread to the walls of a White County home early Friday.
White County E-9-1-1 Dispatch received the call at 5:20 a.m., and units from White County Fire Services Stations 2 and 4 along with Cleveland Fire Department responded to the home at 401 Mary Davidson Drive, east of Cleveland.
Upon arrival of fire units, heavy smoke was visible from the exterior of the home and flames could be seen coming from the top of the chimney; the occupants were safely outside, said White County Public Safety Spokeswoman Ana Newberry.
Firefighters entered the structure and used an extinguisher to try and put the fire out. A roof ladder then was used because the fire had extended into the attic area.
Once the wall surface was removed, a quick knockdown occurred, Newberry said.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the family with immediate needs
Firefighters were on scene for about two hours.
Newberry reminds homeowners who have a chimney to have those chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned at least once per year.
