Two Forsyth County students chosen for EMC Washington Youth Tour

Sawnee EMC has chosen two young women from Cumming to represent the utility in the 52nd Annual Washington Youth Tour.

Mgha Sequeira and Isha Naidu demonstrated strong leadership qualities, exemplary social skills, and they both desire to learn more about the electric cooperative business model, their government, and their nation, according to representatives with the utility. The two will go to Washington D.C. this June.

The Washington Youth Tour is a leadership experience sponsored by EMCs in Georgia and across the country. This year’s tour exposes participants to the world of politics, leadership, team building and the rich history of electric co-ops. Each year the teens are challenged to consider the part they play in government and the electric cooperative movement, to become involved citizens and to consider careers in public service.

“These students represent the next generation of educated, engaged citizen leaders in our communities and country,” says Cindy Badgett, Sawnee’s Director of External Affairs. “It’s important for them to experience the nation’s capital, to see monuments and memorials honoring those who made sacrifices so that we can live and worship in a free society. They get to experience this with other students who share similar hopes and dreams, but also come from a variety of backgrounds and different parts of the state and country.”

When the group arrives in Washington D.C., participants will have a unique opportunity to meet with their elected officials and discuss the issues that are important back home. Georgia’s delegation will convene with more than 1,700 youth representing electric cooperatives from across the nation and they will have the opportunity to mingle with peers from other states and exchange views concerning local and national issues.
