Forsyth County Senior Services expanding program offerings for residents

By Russell Brown

The county will offer new programs for adults over 50 as well traditional senior center services and activities for adults over 60 at the newly renovated Sexton Hall.

“Our Senior Services staff are here to enrich the lives of seniors in our community by offering opportunities to challenge both their mind and body,” said Forsyth County Senior Services Director Ruthie Brew.

“We invite mature adults who want to be active and make new friends to get involved in our respite and congregate programs.”

Both programs, which will be offered at Sexton Hall when it reopens following a year's worth of renovations in early May,  are designed to help seniors continue to live in their homes and maintain their independence while providing opportunities for socialization, involvement in the community and fun according to Brew.

The respite program, catered to those seeking memory support, is offered Mondays and Thursdays, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. That program is lead by a specially trained staff.

The congregate program, which begins on May 9, includes lunch and four hours of activities including brain challenges, exercise, bingo, parties, day trips and more. It will be offered Tuesdays,Wednesdays and Fridays, from 9:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Forsyth County Senior Services already offers a respite and congregate program at the Center at Charles Place, located near downtown Cumming.

Brew believes the programs offered at all three senior facilities is important to the community.

"We are providing a place for this age group to recreate. The other recreation facilities are fabulous, but they are more geared toward children and families. So our three facilities are places where people can gather in community with people their age, more at their ability level, and feel comfortable," said Brew.

In addition to the programs offered to more mature seniors, Sexton Hall Enrichment Center will also offer a full schedule of active adult programming for those 50 and over in classes that include art, technology, meditation, fitness and Bridge.

The third senior center location, Hearthstone Lodge Community Center, is a fitness facility for active adults ages 50 and over. It offers an indoor heated pool, fitness equipment and classes.
