Piedmont College to hold graduation ceremonies on May 6 in Demorest

Piedmont College will mark Spring Commencement Week at the Athens and Demorest campuses May 3–6, 2017, with events and ceremonies for 404 new graduates.

The celebration will include two Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 6, with undergraduates entering the Johnny Mize Athletic Center in Demorest at 10 a.m. and graduate students collecting their diplomas at 2 p.m. (Due to event space limitations, tickets will be required for guest admission to the Mize Center for the 10 a.m. undergraduate Commencement.) President James F. Mellichamp and Board Chairman Thomas A. “Gus” Arrendale III will present diplomas to 190 undergraduates receiving Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees. At the second ceremony, 214 graduates will receive advanced degrees, including Master of Business Administration, Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching, Education Specialist, and Doctor of Education degrees.

Commencement week also will include special pinning ceremonies at the Demorest and Athens campuses for graduates of Piedmont’s Daniel School of Nursing at 6 p.m., May 3 and May 4 respectively.

On Friday, May 5, the graduating seniors will gather in the Chapel at the Demorest campus at 5 p.m. for the annual Baccalaureate service. The speaker will be the Rev. Tim Garvin-Leighton, campus minister. The Baccalaureate service will be followed by a dinner on the Quad for graduates and their families and the annual Senior Student-Athlete Award Ceremony at 7 p.m. in the Swanson Center, sponsored by the Piedmont College P-Club.

On Saturday, the speaker for the undergraduate Commencement ceremony will be Jim Spohrer of San Jose, California. Spohrer is director of Cognitive Open Technologies for IBM Research and former director of IBM Global University Programs.

At the graduate Commencement ceremony, the speaker will be Capt. Alan W. Price, former Chief Pilot for Delta Airlines’ Atlanta pilot base. As the founder of Georgia-based Falcon Leadership Inc., Price is an international consultant on teamwork, communications, and crisis leadership.
