Forsyth County Commission intends to leave millage rates alone, will increase taxes for some

By AccessWDUN staff
Forsyth County Commissioners Wednesday announced their intent to leave current millage rates in place, but due to growth in the tax digest, the move will reflect an increase in property taxes for some property owners.

The proposed increase is 3.85 percent higher than the rollback millage rate, according to a news release from the county.

According to the Georgia Department of revenue, rollback millage rates, "produce the same total revenue on the current year's new digest that last year's millage rate would have produced had no reassessments (or growth, according to the county) occurred."

Forsyth County's digest has grown by 7.66 percent, 3.67 percent from new construction and 3.99 percent comes from increased values in reassessments.  Individual tax bills are based on assessed property value.

The public will have three opportunities to weigh in on the proposed millage rates, two on July 6 and one on July 20.  County commissioners are expected to set the rate on the 20th at their 6:30 p.m. meeting.

The current and proposed new rates are 4.642 mills for maintenance and operations, 1.975 mills for fire and a bond rate of 1.419 mills, according to the county.

"These rates will fund the county’s 2018 general operating budget, which is currently in the preliminary stages of development," the county news release stated.  "Forsyth County continues to have millage rates among the lowest in metro Atlanta."
