Retiring Oakwood Councilman honored at special reception

By Bryan Pirkle Reporter

Oakwood City Council held a reception Thursday night to honor retiring council member Sam Evans for his 29 years of service to the city.

In a gathering held inside the Oakwood Community Building, city officials recognized Evans' nearly three decades of service with the presentation of a special proclamation that outlined his background and thanked him for the dutiful way in which he carried out his responsibilities.

Evans first joined the City of Oakwood as a member of the city Planning Commission in 1988; he remained in that post for the next decade, up until he was elected to the City Council in 1998.

After attending Gainesville's now-closed E.E. Butler High School, Evans graduated from a dual enrollment program at Lanier Technical College with a degree in automotive mechanics. He then enrolled at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, where, according to the proclamation, he was a member of the track and football teams while working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Communications.
