Drought: Only three counties in Georgia now drought-free

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

Drought conditions now cover all of Georgia except for parts of three counties in the extreme southeastern portion of the state.

The latest weekly report from the U.S. Drought Monitor, which was released Thursday morning, shows it is "abnormally dry" in most of the state, including Gainesville and the rest of northeast Georgia.  However, a "moderate" drought covers a swath of counties from near LaGrange to the Waycross area, while "severe" conditions have a grip on a pocket of counties in extreme southwest Georgia.

One year ago, drought conditions also persisted over most of the state, with the worst - an "extreme" drought - covering virtually all of north Georgia.
