The Milken Institute's latest ranking of the Best Performing Small Cities in the country has Gainesville coming in third.
According to the report, Gainesville gained seven spots over last year's ranking, and sits just behind Bend-Redmond, Oregon, and St. George, Utah, and just ahead of San Rafael, California. It is the only Georgia city in the top ten
The report notes that Gainesville came in first in one-year high-tech GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth, second in one-year job growth and seventh in five-year job growth.
The 2017 Milken Institute Best-Performing Cities Index ranks U.S. metropolitan areas by how well they are creating and sustaining jobs and economic growth, according to the institute's Website. The components include job, wage and salary, and technology growth. In most years, these give a good indication of the underlying structural performance of regional economics, the report notes.
