The Gwinnett County Police Department has been paying special attention to parked vehicles to make sure residents are making the grade when it comes to theft prevention.
Cpl. Michelle Pihera said in a recent interview that vehicle break-ins happen on a regular basis.
"Sometimes cars are broken into at apartment complex parking lots, the parks that we have, shopping centers, just about any commercial area," Pihera said.

To help lower the number of vehicle break-ins, officers are randomly checking out cars to see how easy or tempting it would be for a thief to commit a crime..
Pihera said officers are checking for unlocked doors and valuables being left in plain view in the vehicle, among other warning signs that make a vehicle vulnerable.
Pihera said if an officer evaluates a car, the officer will complete a report card giving the vehicle owner an assessment and some advice on how to keep the vehicle safer. She said the report cards will be left on the windshields of vehicles that are checked.
