North Georgia could experience first widespread freeze of the season this weekend

By B.J. Williams

Get ready to bundle up this weekend for the coldest weather of the season for North Georgia.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for early Saturday morning for 21 counties across the mountains of Northwest and Northeast Georgia. The freeze warning is in effect from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Among the counties included in the freeze warning are Dawson, Fannin, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Union, Towns and White counties.

After a chilly morning Saturday, cold air settles across a larger area of the northern part of Georgia Saturday night into Sunday morning. The National Weather Service has posted a freeze watch for that time period. The freeze watch encompasses Hall County and the surrounding area.

Forecasters have said temperatures will drop about 10 degrees lower than normal for this time of year. That means sensitive vegetation could be damaged. Also, unprotected outdoor plumbing could be at risk. They encourage pet owners to keep animals inside while the temperatures are below normal.
