UPDATE: Firefighters: Son died trying to save parents in Lilburn house fire

By AccessWDUN Staff

A man died early Saturday morning while trying to save his parents from a house fire in Lilburn, firefighters said.

Crews were called to the home on Glasgow Drive around 3:30 a.m. and, when directed by by-standers, found two unconscious victims inside the home, according to a statement issued by the Gwinnett County Fire Department.

One victim, an adult son who lives with his parents in the home, was declared dead at the scene. Firefighters spoke with the father, who said through a translator that his son helped him out of the home, then went back inside for his mother, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The father is said to have minor injuries, and he, too, was taken to the hospital. The family's identities have not been released.

The fire started in the home's second kitchen, which is part of an addition to the home, firefighters said.

"The last time the kitchen was reportedly used was late in the afternoon on the previous day. Though the area of origin has been determined, the exact cause of the fire is unknown," said Tommy Rutledge, Gwinnett County Fire Department public information officer, in a statement.

The home is considered a total loss.
