A Dawsonville man plans to run this year for the 9th District congressional seat now held by Republican Doug Collins of Gainesville.
Aaron Gilmer, a financial regulatory compliance auditor, was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat on the state Public Service Commission four years ago.
He was one of several candidates for statewide office announced by the Georgia party recently.
A Democrat, Joshua McCall, announced his candidacy for the congressional post several months ago. On Friday, a spokesman for Collins confirmed that he plans to seek another term this year.
