First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Gainesville were down 10 percent in May, compared to a year ago, and nearly 10 percent statewide.
Gainesville was one of six metropolitan areas showing a double-digit decline. The others were Dalton (37.1 percent); Warner Robins (20 percent); Rome (13.3); Valdosta (12.1); and, Columbus (10.3). Statewide, claims were down 9.7 percent.
Of the 14 metropolitan areas in the state, only Savannah, Albany and Hinesville reported an increase, according to state Labor Commissioner Mark Butler.
