Slowly and steadily, the people participating in this year's Rainbow Family of Light Gathering are making their way into the national forest in Lumpkin County.
Katie Salm with the U.S. Forest Service told the Georgia News Network more than 1,400 people are in the area so far, but they think thousands more will arrive this weekend. Anticipated attendance is between 5,000 and 7,000.
According to the June 28 update from Forest Service officials, members of the Rainbow Family held a four-hour town hall meeting at the Dahlonega Parks and Recreation building Thursday night so local residents could meet some of the campers and ask questions about the event.
Each year, the Rainbow Family of Light gets together on national forest property. This year, the annual gathering is being staged in the Nimblewill Gap area of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest in North Georgia.
Salm said the peak of the event happens on Wednesday, July 4, when participants hold a day-long prayer service for world peace.
