Daniela Blancarte of North Hall High School won the Best in Show and First Place awards in the painting (2D) category for the 2018 National Young Marine Artist Search competition sponsored by the American Society of Marine Artists. Her winning work is titled “Co-existence” a watercolor and ink piece.
The jurors for the 2018 YMAS National Competition selected the 2D award winners from 58 paintings and drawings submitted by students from Georgia, New Hampshire, Texas and Oregon. Blancarte will receive an award check, special award plaque, award ribbon, ASMA tote bag containing other gifts, ASMA student membership and will be invited to the November 2018 ASMA Meeting in Charleston, SC as an honored guest. This is the sixth year of the Young Marine Artist Search (YMAS), sponsored by ASMA, whose quest is to identify and nurture young artists, ages 16 to 22, who are interested in maritime subjects.
Blancarte, a rising junior at North Hall High School, was a winner at the Annual Youth Art Exhibition at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center in Gainesville in March. A partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville, the awards she won with this piece were first place in the 10th grade and second place overall Best in Show, $1,000 from the Charles J. Thurmond Youth Art Scholarship Awards. Additionally, “Co-Existence” was selected by a panel of the Vision 2030 Public Art Committee, an Initiative of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce, and received a $300 award as one of the five pieces selected to appear in a local art installation known as the Free Range Art Project next year.
