Lingering damage from tropical storm leads to cancellation of Unicoi event

By AccessWDUN Staff

Because of lingering damage from Tropical Storm Alberto, at least one annual fall event has been canceled at Unicoi State Park in White County.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said Unicoi, along with Smithgall Woods and the Hardman Farm Trail, sustained significant damage when Alberto dumped 14 inches of rain on the area in late May

Typically, Unicoi is the host park for an Outdoor Adventure Day in September, an event held as part of National Hunting and Fishing Day

"Sadly, the event is canceled this year due to the tropical storm damage experienced at Unicoi and other Northeast Georgia locations," said DNR spokeswoman Melissa Cummings in a press statement.

She said damage at Unicoi included the loss of several pedestrian bridges and the access road leading to the traditional site of the Outdoor Adventure Day.

"While these areas are scheduled for repair, it will not be in time for the September event," Cumming said. "Event planners are grateful for their supportive volunteer workforce and the interest of the public, and look forward to coming back bigger and better in September 2019."

Cummings said there are still other activities taking place at Unicoi State Park for the upcoming fall season.
