Former teacher indicted on four counts in biting incident, including bribery

By B.J. Williams

A Dacula man accused of biting a 14-year-old girl on the buttocks has been indicted on four criminal counts by a Hall County grand jury.

The indictment was handed down against Jonathan William Herbert, 30, during the grand jury's July 2018 term; the document was filed Monday with the Clerk of Court's office.

Herbert was arrested on July 4 at Lake Lanier Islands when he reportedly swam under water and bit the girl, according to Hall County Sheriff's Office investigators.

In addition to facing charges of sexual battery against a child under the age of 16, battery and public drunkenness, Herbert also was charged with bribery, apparently for offering money to a deputy to avoid arrest. The indictment says Herbert offered $200 to the deputy "for the purpose of influencing him in the performance of his official duties."

Herbert was a teacher with the Gwinnett County School System at the time of his arrest. The school system confirmed he resigned from his job on August 1, 2018.
