A man and his pets were killed and two other people were injured in a mobile home fire early Friday morning in Walton County.
The fire was reported at 2:32 a.m. at 2220 Willow Springs Church Road in Social Circle, according to an investigator with the Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office.
"My investigator determined that the cause of the fire was the result of unattended stovetop cooking," Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens said. "The blaze destroyed the late model mobile home, and several dogs perished in the fire."
Adam Rogers, 58, was killed when he attempted to re-enter the burning home to save the dogs. He had been awakened by smoke, according to the investigation, and had alerted two other men in the house so they could escape.
Those men, identified as Daniel Stevenson and Krade Kardem, each sustained minor burns to their hands and feet while trying to rescue Rogers from the blaze.
Commissioner Hudgens’ Fire Investigation Unit was assisted by the Walton County Fire and Rescue.
Hudgens said so far this year, fire has claimed the lives of 63 Georgians.
