Gas leak prompts evacuation of Hall County School District bus garage, JHS annex

By B.J. Williams

UPDATE:

Atlanta Highway was reopened at noon, according to Hall County authorities.

Original story (10:40 a.m.):

A reported gas leak at the Hall County School District Transportation Center on Atlanta Highway in Oakwood has prompted the evacuation of the bus garage and the nearby Johnson High School annex.

School District officials said the leak was caused by the rupture of a gas line during road construction related to a lane widening on Atlanta Highway.

Hall County Fire Services officials are on the scene.  They said wind is carrying gas fumes away from the main building of Johnson High School and the Academies of Discovery.

HCFS Capt. Zachary Brackett said the northbound lanes of Atlanta Highway are closed in the vicinity of the bus garage. Traffic is congested in the area as a result.

The gas company also is on scene to make the repair, which official believe will take until about noon.
