Braselton man wanted in North Georgia for assault on a deputy arrested in Tennessee

By B.J. Williams

A Braselton man on the run from Jackson County authorities since last month has been arrested in Hawkins County, Tennessee.

According to Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum, authorities in Kingsport arrested Shannon Michael Carter, 25, on Monday, Aug. 27.

Carter was wanted in Jackson County in connection with a July 22 incident in the West Jackson area where he and another suspect attempted to run over a deputy from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

"Carter and Martin [Joshua Martin, the other suspect] then rammed a Jackson County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle and led authorities on a lengthy vehicle chase into Gwinnett County," Mangum said in a press statement at the time of the incident.

Martin was caught and arrested, but Carter escaped on foot. Both men had several firearms at the time of the Georgia crime, according to Mangum.

Since that time, Carter had been on the run from local authorities.

Now, according to a report in the Kingsport Times-News, Carter is being held at the Kingsport City Jail after he allegedly led officers on a chase in a vehicle stolen from a location in Johnson City.

The newspaper report said officers spotted the stolen vehicle and made a traffic stop. When one of the officers exited his patrol car, the driver of the stolen vehicle, identified as Carter, put the vehicle in reverse and pinned the officer between the two vehicles. Carter then led the officers on a lengthy pursuit. He tried to hide the stolen vehicle in a high school parking lot, but officers spotted him, again gave chase, and Carter eventually crashed the vehicle in a residential neighborhood and was arrested.

The officer was taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries and released.

Carter faces a number of charges in Tennessee, including attempted criminal homicide and aggravated assault.

Mangum said Carter will first face charges in Tennessee and then will be returned to Jackson County to face a lengthy list of charges including  party to the crime of aggravated assault on a police officer, felony obstruction x 2, burglary, felony theft by taking, possession of heroin, possession of marijuana, possession of firearm during commission of a crime,  possession of firearms by convicted felon x 4,  possession of drug-related objects,  party to the crime of reckless conduct, party to the crime of criminal damage to property, party to the crime of interference with government property and other offenses.
