There was plenty of movement for area teams in the latest Georgia Sports Writers Association High School Football Poll released this week, including one new program in the rankings.
Dawson County jumped into the Class 3A top 10 for the first time this season following a 38-21 defeat of Denmark. The Tigers (4-0) come in ninth as they begin play in Region 7-3A this week against Lumpkin County (2-2).
Meanwhile, Buford, Flowery Branch, Rabun County and Commerce each climbed their respective rankings, while Jefferson held firm at No. 9 in Class 3A. The Dragons (3-1) defeated Gainesville 42-10 last week and begin play in Region 8-3A against East Jackson (1-3) this week.
In Class 5A, Buford edged up one spot to No. 2. The Wolves (3-1) are coming off a 54-27 win over Newton and will take on Class 7A No. 5 Archer (3-1) this week in a massive non-region tilt in Lawrenceville. The game will br broadcast live on WDUN AM 550.
Flowery Branch also climbed to from sixth to fifth in Class 4A despite sitting through a bye last week. The Falcons (3-0) travel to face Gainesville (0-4) on Friday in a game broadcast live on WDUN FM 102.9.
In Class 2A, Rabun County continued its ascent from sixth to fifth following a 42-20 defeat of Putnam. The Wildcats (3-1, 1-0 Region 8-2A) will tackle Monticello at home on (1-3, 0-1) Friday in Tiger.
Commerce also jumped two places in Class A to eighth. The Tigers (4-0) hammered Providence 56-0 last week and travel to face Madison County (2-3) this Friday.
Also receiving votes in the rankings was North Hall. The Trojans (4-0) fought back to defeat White County 27-20 last week and will travel to face Cherokee Bluff (0-4) on Friday.
