UPDATE: Dawson girls knock off North Hall; Lumpkin stuns GAC

DAWSONVILLE – The streak is over.

Dawson County (15-7, 6-3) went on a 20-2 run in the third quarter to take control and knock off North Hall 68-59 for the first time in seven tries Tuesday night. 

“It was a great night in Dawsonville,” Dawson coach Steve Sweat said. “We made a good run in the third quarter with some good defense and fastbreak points to take the lead back.”

The Lady Tigers jumped over North Hall (14-8, 6-4) in the Region 7-3A standings into second place with three games to go.

Kaylee Sticker led the Lady Tigers with 27 points. 

“She showed her skill tonight,” Sweat said. 

Grace Hollifield led the Lady Trojans with 22 points and Ansleigh Ferguson scored 18 points.

Dawson jumped out to a 20-11 lead by the end of the first quarter. Then, North Hall started firing shots, going on a 7-0 run to cut the lead 20-18 in the second quarter. 

Macy Gillespie gave the Lady Trojans their first lead 25-24 when she hit two free throws with 1:47 left in the half. 

Marley Townley answered the lead change with a bucket 20 seconds later, giving the Lady Tigers back the lead 26-25.

But, the Lady Trojans ended the quarter on a 5-0 run, including a Macy Clark 3-pointer at the buzzer to give North Hall a 31-26 halftime lead. North Hall outscored Dawson 20-6 in the quarter.

The Lady Tigers fought back in the second half, with Sticker firing on all cylinders. She nailed a bucket to give the Lady Tigers a 36-35 advantage with 3:50 to go in the third quarter. A minute later, Sticker splashed in back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the Lady Tiger lead to 46-37. Sophia D’Oliveria hit a 3-pointer and Sticker netted a bucket to end the quarter up 56-37.

The fourth quarter was much of the same from the Lady Tigers. Sticker extended Dawson’s lead to 60-49 with 3:56 to go, then D'Oliveria nailed a basket and Sticker followed with a deuce the next trip down the floor, going up 63-53. 

North Hall closed the gap late in the fourth to 7 points, but Dawson answered the Trojan run. 

Maddie Anglin scored 13, Marlie Townley had 12, Sophia D'Oliveira scored 9, Ella Siuta had 3, and Mariah Benson and Anna Lowe scored 2 points each.

Dawson will travel to Lumpkin County Friday. Game time is 7 p.m. North Hall will host Lumpkin County on Jan. 29. Game time is 6 p.m.

Lumpkin’s “Great 8” gets a great win over Region 7-3A leader Greater Atlanta Christian Tuesday night in Norcross.

“I’m biased, but if there is a better high school sports story in Georgia I have yet to hear it,” Lumpkin coach David Dowse said. “These girls are amazing!”

Dubbed the “Great 8” because of the Lady Indians’ eight-player varsity roster, they held off a run by GAC late in the fourth quarter to knock off the Lady Spartans.

Lumpkin had four players in double digits with Isabel Davenport leading the way with 20 points, including a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. 

MacKenzie Pulley and Ashlynn Wistoski scored 13 points each, Clara White knocked down 11 and  Makenzie Caldwell chipped in 4.

The Lady Indians (17-5, 6-4) will host Dawson County Friday night. Game time is 7 p.m.

 

DACULA 74
GAINESVILLE 67

Tia Shelton scored 21 points and Tija Blackwell had 20 in a Region 8-6A loss to Dacula on the road Tuesday night.
Sadie Roach turned 15 points.

Dacula outscored Gainesville 23-19 in the first quarter, but Gainesville outpaced the Lady Falcons 17-14 in the second to close the gap to one point 37-36 at the half.

The Lady Red Elephants kept it close in the second half, but couldn’t find enough offense to pass Dacula.

Gainesville (10-9, 3-4) returns to action at Apalachee on Friday at 7 p.m.

 

CHEROKEE BLUFF 60
FANNIN COUNTY 48

Maddie Thomas and Timber Gaither scored 19 points each to lead the Lady Bears past Fannin County Tuesday night. 

Madi Phillips had 15 points.

Cherokee Bluff (12-10, 3-6) will travel to GAC Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.

 

RABUN COUNTY 57
ELBERT COUNTY 45

Kaitlin Coleman scored 18 points and pulled four boards to lead the Lady Wildcats past Region 8-2A foe Elbert County Tuesday night at home.

Brooke Henricks scored 11 points and Laken Stiles had 11 points.

Rabun County (20-1, 11-0) will travel to Union Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.

 

CHESTATEE 46
WEST HALL 28

Christina Garcia scored 13 points and Nicole Sedwick had 11 to lead the Lady War Eagles past West Hall Tuesday night. 

Emma Easterwood chipped in 6 points. 

The Lady War Eagles (12-11, 6-4) will host White County Friday. Game time 7 p.m.

 

FLOWERY BRANCH 82
DENMARK 25

Flowery Branch continued its tear through Region 7-4A with a dominating win over Denmark Tuesday night. 

Caroline Wysocki led the way with 19 points. Ashlee Locke had 14, Abi Whitaker scored 12 and Ashley Scott had 10.

Flowery Branch 20-3, 11-0) will host Marist Friday night. Game time is 7 p.m.

 

BUFORD 63
JOHNSON 15

Buford played its entire bench Tuesday night in a blowout win over Johnson. 

Sara Viti led the Lady Wolves with 10 points. 

Buford (18-2, 7-0) will travel to Cedar Shoals Friday. Tip is 7 p.m.

 

LAKEVIEW 62
TOWNS COUNTY 39

Lakeview stayed atop of the Region 8-A standings with a win at Towns County Tuesday night.

The win dropped Towns County to second place in the standings.

Eliza Snyder led the Lady Lions with 16 points, Jackie Allen and Joelle Snyder had 11 each, Sadie Thrailkill scored 8, Maddy Towles had 7 and Savannah Kinsey chipped in 5. 

Lakeview (18-4, 7-0) will host Johnson Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.

Towns County (11-9, 5-1) travels to Prince Avenue Friday. Tip is 7 p.m.

 

LANIER CHRISTIAN 67
PRAISE ACADEMY 23

It was close for a half then LCA blew it open.

The Lightning held PA to 6 points in the second half en route to the blow out region win Tuesday night on the road. 

Madison Hughes led LCA with a game-high 16 points. Faith Wasden had 13 points, Loganne Wilson netted 12, Hollie Beussee and Ashley Avery had 6 each, Lexie Robertson and Shelby Ham scored 5 each and Lily Martin and Reece Montgomery had 2 each.

LCA (12-8) will host Oakwood Christian Academy. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
