Brush-burning accident leaves one dead in Hall County

By Bryan Pirkle Reporter

A Hall County man died Saturday afternoon while conducting a controlled burn outside his home.

Greg Bryant, 52, was killed while burning brush around his property, according to Hall County Fire Services Captain Zachary Brackett.

"About 2:45, Hall County Fire Services received a call for what was initially thought to be a grill fire that was out of control," Brackett explained. "That got changed to a cardiac arrest while we were in route, and then changed over [again]."

Bryant had apparently been burning limbs and leaves around the property when the fatal accident occurred.

"At some point he was using some sort of accelerant, and accidentally caught himself on fire," Brackett said. "[Bryant] subsequently passed away as a result of the injuries involved there."

Brackett said the incident, which occurred on Leach Road just off Chestatee Road in the northwest portion of the county, remained under investigation.

"The Hall County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the circumstances of the death in addition to the Hall County Sheriff's Office."

Bryant was following regulations at the time of the accident, having received a permit from the county ahead of the controlled burn.
