Even though Northeast Georgia Medical Center received Trauma Level II designation in 2013, the hospital system continues to receive recognition from various medical groups across the country.
The latest is the American College of Surgeons (ACS), which this month announced its verification for the NGMC Level II Trauma Center.
NGMC is one of only three Level II trauma centers in the state of Georgia to receive the ACS verification.
"It [the ACS verification] is more of a rigorous process and they do a more deep dive into the care you provide to validate that you really do what you say you can do," said Jesse Gibson, Trauma Program manager for NGMC, in a recent interview with AccessWDUN.
Angela Gary, executive director of Trauma and Emergency Services for NGMC, said having the verification from ACS is the "gold standard" for trauma care centers.
"Northeast Georgia Medical Center really cares about being the best of the best," Gary said. "The American College of Surgeons holds us to a ton of standards and we have to meet every single one of those. That states to the community that we have a tremendous commitment to provide the best in class care every single time no matter what."
Gibson and Gary both pointed out they have a vested interest in seeing NGMC attain recognitions, such as the one from ACS, not just from a professional standpoint, but also from a personal one.
"Growing up in this area and in this community, for us to have the confidence in our health system and in this certification is really important," said Gibson. "We want to live, play and work here, so we want to know that if something unexpected does happen that the team here at the hospital is completely capable with the resources to handle any injuries that might come in."
