A Gainesville woman has been charged with stealing nearly $5,000 from an elderly man she had been working for.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office said Keera Paige Carlton, 21, turned herself in at the Hall County Jail on Monday, Sept. 30 to face charges of financial exploitation of an elderly person.

Carlton, who had been working as a home healthcare worker for the 88-year-old victim, is accused of taking the victim's checkbook and writing three checks to herself. Total amount of the checks was $4,650, according to the preliminary investigation.

A man with power of attorney for the victim alerted authorities to the possible crime on Sept. 21. A warrant for Carlton's arrest was taken out on Sept. 24.

Carlton has been released from jail on her own recognizance.
