By B.J. Williams

A 54-year-old motorcyclist from Hiawassee was killed in a wreck on Highway 17 Friday morning, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Trooper N. Ackerson, who investigated the accident, said it happened around 9:50 a.m. when the driver of a Honda Civic attempted to make a left turn onto the highway from Woods Grove Road.

The driver pulled into the path of the motorcycle, striking the bike and killing David Bearden.

Ackerson said the female driver of the Civic, whose name was not immediately available, has been charged with failure to yield while making a left turns and involuntary manslaughter in the second degree.

The accident was the second fatal crash investigated by troopers from Post 27 on Friday morning. The first occurred in Gilmer County around 1 a.m.
